Mark West 2006 Pinot Noir California
We’ve had several good bottles of Mark West Pinot within the last few years. The ‘05 was good and now the ‘06 vintage is just as good. Well maybe it COULD sit for a year to develop a little more edge…but why? For around $10 a bottle, you should just sit back and enjoy it without any worry about the cost. Nice black cherry flavor with hints of oaky spice. Easy to drink and easy on your budget.
Food pairing ideas:
Try this Pinot with anything. Goes well with beef, fish and chicken. (creamy or spicy)
We’ve seen this bottle of Pinot Noir in several of our local grocery stores as well as in most wine or liquor stores.
A great buy under $10!

Prodigo 2004 Malbec Argentina
The lighter side of the Malbec varietals… This wine from Alessandro Speri’s Prodigo was probably our least favorite Malbec. Nose and color fine, initial taste was ok but far from wow. Probably would pass next time on this one.

Gimenez Riili 2005 Torrontes Mendoza, Argentina
What better on a warm sunny afternoon than this very refreshing white wine. This dry signature white wine from Argentina really hit the spot with nice aromas of citrus and flowers on the nose along with a sweet and fruity taste. Again, extremely refreshing and very enjoyable all the way down!
Food pairing ideas:
Try it with some grilled shrimp, crap or lobster! Or even great with cheese and crackers before dinner.

Hacienda Del Plata Mayoral 2002 Syrah Reserve
This Syrah from Argentina really impressed us. Fantastic wine!
A cool little piece from the label:
“This wine makes us remember the brave, expert mountaineers who were men influenced by the wild nature of the Andes. This Syrah that shines in the light and matures in the dark, was able to capture the secrets of that landscape and in people. It is generous and sober in those fragances and colours that high-lighted for ever the lands of Hacienda del Plata.”

Gallo of Sonoma 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon
Gallo of Sonoma brings us a great bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon wine for the price! Nice aroma’s of raspberry, currant and spice on the nose with a smooth and lingering finish! Not our absolute favorite Cabernet BUT for that price, it’s a very drinkable red wine!
Food pairing ideas:
Try this or any other Cabernet Sauvignon with some red meat. This wine goes great with some bbq’d steak or with almost any grilled or smoked red meat.

Byron 2004 Pinot Noir
A very fine bottle of Pinot Noir from the Santa Maria Valley! Very smooth and very much worth the $25-$29 price of admission. Very tasty…one of our favorite Pinot Noir’s! Make sure you put Byron on your list of wineries to visit when you’re in the Santa Barbara area. Some of their wines you can only get from the vineyard directly.
From the winemaker:
There are rich aromas of red plum, leather and clove that are highlighted by accents of jasmine and earthiness. The wine displays excellent intensity of flavor, featuring hints of black cherry, plum, brown spice and subtle nuances of French oak. Natural acidity and smooth tannins support the silky mid-palate. The wine culminates in a long, smoky finish.

Wiens Family Cellars 2005 Viognier
This past weekend we went to Temecula, California to attend the Balloon and Wine Festival and decided to make a stop off at Wiens winery along the way. So glad we did. Wiens winery had some very nice wines, especially for those warm summer days.
This California Viognier, is perfect chilled and server on a warm day. As the label says, it’s “Luscious, full bodied, and rich.” Some great fruity flavors of pear and apricot with notes of floral and spice make this a very drinkable Viognier white wine.
Food pairing ideas:
Tastes great with some grilled seafood, chicken or goat cheese.
You can order through the wonderful staff at Wiens: 888.98.WIENS

Echelon Central Coast 2004 Pinot Noir
About 8 or 9 years ago I was introduced to the Echelon label at a restaurant in Denver, CO. Ever since, we’ve enjoyed many of their wines. I admit, I have had 1 or 2 not so good bottles, but overall most of the wines from Echelon have been really good.
This $10-$13 bottle of Central Coast Pinot Noir was one of their finer bottles of wine. Clove and cherry on the nose with a slight hint of oak and rose petals. Taste was dark cherry with a very enjoyable smooth oak flavor after each sip! (Oak is one of those flavors we always look for and enjoy in a good bottle of wine.)
Food pairing ideas:
For a VERY enjoyable meal, we paired this bottle of Pinot Noir wine with some cedar planked grilled salmon.
Echelon wine can usually be found at your local wine cellar, liquor store or even in your grocery store. (We find it on sale for around $9.99 at Von’s or Ralph’s)

Homewood Winery Flying Wizzbangers 2004 Red Table Wine
Back to California! Ahh…a delightful blend of Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc from wonderful Sonoma, CA. Our friends up in the Napa Valley area took us to Homewood Winery during our last visit and we really enjoyed it. It’s a smaller winery away from all those larger tourist traps with down to earth people and friendly dogs sitting on the grass. Even as the winemaker was pouring the grapes into the press, he was happy to answer our questions and tell us about his wine making process. Nice people and great wines from Homewood Winery!
Order directly through Homewood or visit the winery if you’re up in the Sonoma / Napa Valley area.
